Explanation of terminology used

Please see below the terminology used along with the corresponding explanations:

  • Knot

    • Knot:
      Part of a branch enclosed in the wood.
    • Sound knot:
      Knot without signs of decay and solid across its surface. The knot is at least as hard as surrounding wood and firmly held in place by growth.
    • Small knot:
      Knot with a diameter of up to 5 mm.
    • Black knot:
      Knot which has died due to lack of light.

     

  • Blue stains

    Discoloration ranging from gray to blue, mostly appearing as stripes in the sapwood, which is caused by fungi after entering of water;
    no influence on stability of wood.

  • Cracks

    Cellular separation inside a wood piece, usually along the wood grain (longitudinally).

  • Redheart

    An unnaturally intense discoloration inside a tree with varying shades, intensity and uniformity, which does not diminish the hardness of the wood; appears as a feature in living trees of wood species with an irregular formation of heartwood (e.g. beech).
