Where does Pollmeier get logs from? Does the large cutting capacity have a negative impact on forests.

In our sawmills we only use logs out of German forests. Over 200 years ago, sustainable forestry was implemented in German forests. Back then, sustainability was defined in a way that only the amount of wood should be taken out of the forests that could grow again. This should secure the wood supply of the next generations. Today the forestal laws ensure the sustainable usage of all aspects of forestry. That’s why in German forests more wood grows today than can be used in the same period of time.

Due to our modern sawing technology, we are able to process logs of average quality which represent the main part of our forests. In contrast to traditional sawing techniques, selective cutting enables us to obtain a high yield in top quality timber even when using average and low quality logs. This guarantees our log suppliers more independence in terms of forest management. Furthermore, we can keep our transportation distances short since we are also using these inferior log qualities.

Are your products certified (e.g. PEFC)?

We are certified according to the PEFC standard.

The certification system for sustainable forest management PEFC (= Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification Schemes) is based on international resolutions agreed at the Ministerial Conference on the Protection of Forests in Europe (Helsinki 1993, Lisbon 1998) by 37 nations in the Pan-European process. The primary objective of the PEFC is to document and improve sustainable forest management with regard to economic, ecological and social standards.

The special cutting technique only creates horizontal and semi-horizontal tree rings. This is usually the case with blockboards: the boards often tend to bend and have poor wood stability. Anyway, can I still use Pollmeier beech for my products without any concern?

In order to produce wood which is particularly tension-free and highly stable, we use the latest drying technology: only boards of the same thickness are piled in standard drying bundles and are placed into a kiln. Pollmeier has over 100 of these kilns. Since no unedged board are brought into the kiln, …the stream of hot air flows consistently through the individual drying packages.

Afterwards the wood is dried and especially conditioned so that they have a balanced moisture content throughout the whole cross-section of the board.

Many traditional manufacturers are afraid that the wood will bend after processing because of the horizontal tree rings. Due to our careful conditioning, however, we can reduce the risk of bending to a minimum.

 Quality - drying

Pollmeier beech is pre-sanded on both sides. Does the sawdust affect the durability of my tools?

In this case, we can calm you: the cylinder sanding facility we developed ourselves is the main benefit of the Pollmeier production chain. An exhaustion after sanding prevents the sawdust from remaining on the boards.

Satisfied customers are our best proof: even processors who handle large volumes of Pollmeier beech report no negative effects on the durability of their tools.

Moreover, we can also affirm this scientifically: an independent certificate from the University of Hamburg excludes abrasive band remnants on the boards.

Why is the wood pre-sanded at all? This has no advantages for my production.

You may have experienced the following problem: with traditional lumber you only notice hidden defects in the wood after planing, when you have invested valuable working hours and when it is already too late. The sawn surface of the wood makes it nearly impossible to identify particular defects such as steaming marks, edge cracks or mineral marks.

By contrast the wood at Pollmeier is pre-sanded. So, literally, we obtain a "deep insight" into our lumber and can assure precise quality grading. You profit from our pre-sanding since wood defects are recognized before processing and can be excluded. This saves you wastage and complaints as well as time and money.

 Efficiency - pre-sanding

Pollmeier calculations are based on the KD measurement, but the board thickness decreases during sanding. Does this mean I am paying for wood which I do not receive in the end?

KD measurements match the standard cutting thicknesses that you know from your suppliers today, but consider: traditional lumber will then be trimmed - the chipping is collected as wastage into your silo. "Trimming" is an essential step in the working process.

At Pollmeier the boards are calibrated during pre-sanding and therefore "trimmed industrially". This step is carried out much more cost-effectively due to our fully automated mass production. This means that you save valuable working hours. We simply calculate the material loss for you. The supplied board thickness, however, is then dimensionally stable and can be used to its full extent.

For example: in order to produce a step of a stair with an final thickness of 42mm, a stair producer should use timber with a calculated measurement of up to 55mm. At Pollmeier the calculated measurement would also be 52mm - supplied as 48.5mm thickness (after pre-sanding)- but can be used totally, due to calibration. This means that the final thicknesses of up to 45mm can be produced.

In addition, pre-sanding is a basic prerequisite for our precise grading: only in this way can wood defects and colours be discovered.
(see this question also).

Is each board measured individually?

In order to be more precise and efficient, we do not measure boards individually but convert the entire weight of the package into volume in m3. This formula pays attention to the specific weight of the wood at its moisture content of 7-9%.

Where can I obtain your wood from? What is the minimum purchase volume?

You can obtain Pollmeier beech almost worldwide via wholesale. Small volumes can also be bought quickly and flexibly from stock in our sawmills:Link wird nicht eingfügt!!Direct deliveries are also possible depending on order volume. The minimum purchase volume varies according to the country to be delivered to. Further information on this can be obtained from our sales personnel.

Can I get other types of wood at Pollmeier's well-known standard?

Currently we only cut beech.
Focusing on only one type of wood has made us market leaders within a short period of time. You profit from the extensive know-how that we have gained over the years in specializing in one type of wood. Furthermore, the focusing on only a small amount of standardised products enables efficient industrial production: good wood at good prices!
