Where does Pollmeier get round timber from? At such high cutting volumes, it must have a negative impact on forests.

In our sawmills only round timber from German forests is used for producing beech lumber. For over 200 years, the sustainable use of forests has been implemented in Germany. Sustainability was then defined as only taking as much wood as could grow again. This should ensure supplies of wood as a raw material for subsequent generations. Today, forestry laws protect the sustainable use of all aspects of forestry. Hence in Germany, more wood (volume) and forests (area) are currently growing than can be used within the same period. See also question 2.

Our modern sawing technology also enables us to process trunk wood of average quality: selective cutting means that, unlike traditional sawing techniques, a greater yield at a better lumber grading can be obtained from these trunks. This gives our round timber suppliers greater freedom in terms of forest management. This quality is also accrued by felling in greater volumes. This means that we keep transportation distances in a relatively small trading area as small as possible.

Are your products actually certified (e.g. PEFC)?

We are certified according to the PEFC standard.

The certification system for sustainable forest management PEFC (= Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification Schemes) is based on international resolutions agreed at the Ministerial Conference on the Protection of Forests in Europe (Helsinki 1993, Lisbon 1998) by 37 nations in the Pan-European process. The primary objective of the PEFC is to document and improve sustainable forest management with regard to economic, ecological and social standards.

The special cutting technology only supplies horizontal and inclined tree rings. I know this from conventional side cuttings: the consequences are often highly warped boards and poor wood stability. Can I still use Pollmeier beech for my products without any concern?

Cutting with special band saws at a tangent to the trunk results in a higher proportion of horizontal tree rings. In order to produce wood which is particularly tension-free and is highly stable, we use state-of-the-art drying technology: only boards of equal strength are brought into over 100 rooms - de-stacked by machine into standard drying packages. Since no untrimmed boards are brought into the plant, there is no spray effect: the stream of hot air flows consistently through the individual drying packages.

A speciality is underdrying with final conditioning. This gives the boards a consistent wood moisture content across the whole width of the board - the reason for Pollmeier beech being low in tension.

Many traditional processors are afraid that the wood will warp after processing because of the horizontal tree rings. Our careful conditioning means that we can exclude this disadvantage of inconsistently dried wood.

 Quality - drying

Pollmeier beech is pre-sanded on both sides. Does the sawdust result in decreased durability of my tools?

Here we can put you at your ease with a clear conscience: the cylinder sanding facility we developed ourselves is the real gem of the Pollmeier production chain. Downstream extraction prevents sawdust from remaining on the boards.

The simplest and best reference points are our satisfied customers: even processors who handle large volumes of Pollmeier beech report no adverse effects on the durability of their tools.

Furthermore, we can also affirm this scientifically: an independent expert from the University of Hamburg eliminates abrasive band remnants from the boards.

Why is the wood pre-sanded at all? This has no advantages for my production.

Doubtless you have experience of the following problem: with traditional lumber you only notice hidden defects in the wood after planing, that is when you have invested valuable working hours into it and it is already too late. A wood surface as sawn means that it is virtually impossible to safely discuss particular flaws such as steaming marks, edge cracks, or mineral marks.

By contrast, the wood at Pollmeier is pre-sanded. So, in the truest sense of the term, we obtain a "deep insight" into our lumber and can carry out precise quality grading. You profit from our pre-sanding since wood defects are discerned before processing and can therefore be taken into consideration. This saves you not only from wastage and complaints, but also time and money.

 Efficiency - pre-sanding

Pollmeier calculations are based on the KD measurement, but the board strength decreases during sanding. Does this mean I am paying for wood which I do not actually receive?

KD measurements correspond to the standard cutting strengths that you are accustomed to from your suppliers to date, but consider: traditional lumber must then be trimmed - the resultant chippings collect as arisings in your chipping bunker. "Trimming" is an essential step in the work process.

At Pollmeier the boards are calibrated during pre-sanding and therefore "trimmed industrially". This stage of the work process is carried out much more cost-effectively due to our fully automatic mass production. This means that you save valuable working hours. We simply calculate the material loss for you. The supplied board strength, however, is then exact in size and can be used to its full extent.

For example: in order to produce a step gauge with an end strength of 42mm, a stair maker must use timber with a calculated measurement of up to 55mm. At Pollmeier the calculated measurement can be as small as 52mm - the supplied strength of 48.5mm (after pre-sanding) can be made full use of, however, due to the calibration. This means that end strengths of up to 45mm can be produced.

In addition, pre-sanding is a basic prerequisite for our precise grading: only in this way can wood defects and colours be addressed precisely
(see this question also).

Is each board measured individually?

In order to be more precise and efficient, we do not measure boards individually but convert the entire weight of the package into volume in m3.
Furthermore, the calculated volume is reduced by a reduction factor of the excess length. This means that you are assured a supply of wood which is slightly higher than we actually calculate.

Where can I obtain your wood from? What is the minimum purchase volume?

You can obtain Pollmeier beech almost worldwide via wholesale. Small volumes can also be bought quickly and flexibly on site: here you will find your site management Pollmeier dealer. Direct deliveries are also possible from a certain order volume. The minimum purchase volume varies according to the country to be delivered to. Further information on this can be obtained from our sales personnel.

Can I get other types of wood at Pollmeier's well-known levels of quality?

Currently we only fell beech.
Focusing on only one type of wood has made us market leaders within a short space of time. You profit from the extensive know-how that we have accumulated over the course of time in this type of wood. Furthermore, cutting back to less standardised products enables efficient industrial production: good wood at good prices!
