A 30-m-long and 8-m-high framework pavilion made of beechwood has been centre stage on the Goetheplatz in Frankfurt am Main since the end of 2015. The so-called « pavilion of the future » is operated by the organisers of the « Architektursommer Rhein-Main » together with the urban gardening initiative « Frankfurter Garten ». For the next year, the temporary structure will provide a space for exhibitions, talks and workshops.
Thanks to its timber design, the pavilion is a striking and harmonious addition to this central location. It is surrounded by the historic sandstone and contemporary curtain façades that encircle the « vast square » (FAZ) created by the square trilogy of Rossmarkt, Goetheplatz and Rathenauplatz and which has stood in its present form since the post-war years. The pavilion is seen by the Frankfurt municipality as a test to see whether the erection of a building in this position across the square could breathe life back into this underused inner-city space.
